Piano Keys by Bernee Lee Original Size: 36" x 12" Mixed Media: Acrylic, Oil, Strings, Bamboo As I read more about the Gulangyu Island where my maternal family originated from, I was intriguingly fascinated by the island or Kolongsu as my family refers to it having the highest per capita concentration of piano in China with the largest Piano Museum in Asia. This island is only 2 square kilometres (0.77 sq mi) in area. It is home to about 20,000 people. As I paint, I envisioned walking along the narrow, cobbled streets of the island, hearing music that is sweet and calming. This painting honors those musicians of the past, as well as, the future. The delight of what music brings to you and me. My process: I was inspired to paint the piano but thought not the actual piano but the piano keys close-up, abstract. I could picture it in my head just black and white zoomed in. A painting that can start conversations, that can be interpreted in many ways, yet once the object of inspiration is revealed it can be then seen and loved. I love music and I hope it will go to a home who loves music so much more and be blessed. I listened to music written for the island "Waves of Gulangyu", "鼓浪屿之波", "Gulangyu Island", whilst painting. Feelings as I painted: Joy, calmness, happy, refreshed
