Current Gallery: portraitsofmyinnnerself ( piece)
The fallout from my Father’s suicide during my preadolescent years and my Mother’s subsequent alcoholism has held me in an emotional prison for most of my life. Rife with symbolism, these pieces are the “Portraits of My Inner Self”. They illustrate a turning point in my life when I found that there is no amount of love from my heart, words from my mouth, or action from my hands that can fix or remedy what is done. These works are abstract, surreal illustrations of both the difficulties and growths that I have experienced throughout my life. This series of work came about when the culmination of difficult events came to a crescendo for me. I used the work itself as therapy and they are a fair representation of what my emotions actually "look" like. Pay attention to the roping of the arms as these represent my father's death by hanging and the indefinite impact that a family feels after such an act occurs. They also depict the hopelessness that a loved one of an alcoholic experiences. The wombs and vaginal openings are indicative of my mother/daughter relationships and the fact that the figures are mute and without mouths or hands is significant as well. I will leave the to rest to your interpretation.
